How to use Spells
There are 2 types of Spells in the game
  • Miracles are associated with White Magic, such as healing Spells. They require a Talisman to use.
  • Magic is associated with offensive or "Black Magic" Spells. They require a Catalyst to use.

To use a Spell you must:

  1. Learn the magic Spell or Miracle you wish to cast.
  2. Remember the Spell or Miracle by visiting the trainer.
  3. Make sure you have enough MP for the Spell.
  4. Equip either a Catalyst (for Magic) or Talisman (for Miracles) in any hand (in place of a weapon/shield) and then use [L1]/[R1] to "attack" with that hand, which will cast the currently selected Spell. Later in the game you may acquire the Talisman of Beasts, which allows casting both Magic and Miracles.

The currently selected Spell or Miracle is displayed at the top of the equipment menu at the lower left hand corner of your screen. Press [Up] on the D-Pad to scroll through all remembered Spells/Miracles.

How to Learn SpellsEdit

Initial Trainers

After defeating Phalanx, 2 new NPCs appear in the Nexus.

  • Found in the area behind Blacksmith Boldwin.
  • Teaches basic Miracles if your Faith stat is at least 10.
  • Allows changing which Miracles are memorized.
  • He disappears once Saint Urbain is rescued.
  • He can also disappear before Saint Urbain is actually rescued if you select 'Talk' from his menu enough times (leaving you with nobody to help you learn/remember Miracles), you will know when he speaks of going to rescue Saint Urbain, and that it may be a while before you see him again. If this happens, remember Saint Urbain is easily rescued early on in 4-2.
  • Found in the area behind the World 5 archstone.
  • Teaches basic Spells if your Magic and Intelligence stat are both at least 10 (Otherwise he calls you a "brute" and ignores you).
  • Allows changing which Spells are memorized.
  • He asks you to rescue Sage Freke from 3-1 Tower of Latria.

You need to have a 10+ Magic stat to learn Spells, and 10+ Intelligence* stat to have slot(s) to remember a Spell. You need to have 10+ Faith stat to learn and use Miracles.

When remembering Spells, you will see your known Spells on the left, with a small mark indicating the ones you have memorized. Click on them to toggle which are in memory. On the right you will see the number of slots you have available. Take note of the number of slots required to equip each Spell -- some more powerful Spells take multiple slots.

Advanced Trainers

Advanced trainers will only appear in the Nexus after you rescue them. They can teach you powerful new Spells if you offer them the correct Demon's Souls. You can't leave the Demon's Soul with Stockpile Thomas; you must have it in your inventory to learn the desired Spell.

An Intelligence Stat of 40 provides for the maximum of six Magic slots. However, this can be increased to seven slots by equipping the Ring of Magical Nature
